Program Note:

Over the past several years I have fallen in love with pop music from Southeast Asia. It all began after listening to an anthology of Cambodian pop music from the 1960s through the 1990s (Cambodian Cassette Archives: Khmer Folk & Pop music Vol. 1 CD SF ). The juxtaposition of simple pop tunes mixed with the strange timbres and intonations of the Cambodian culture was so striking to me that I had to write my own. This short homage is in the “Ranaat Eek” tuning system, which is named after the high pitched metallophones of Thailand and Cambodia.
